Practice Self-Care 3-A

Last week we worked on Balance and started to define what your perfect balance would look like.  Hopefully you were able to make some shifts so you are more aligned with your ideal balance.  This week, we will explore how taking care of yourself can be beneficial to you and to the ones you love.  If you are practicing self-care for the first time, it may feel like you are being a little selfish, but once you begin see the benefits, I hope you will realize it is actually healthy.  Practicing self-care goes hand in hand with our last two topics; Happiness is a Choice and Balance.

By taking care of yourself, you are better equipped to help others around you.  If you come from a healthy and happy mindset, everyone will see  the benefits, not just you.  Think about your friends, your spouse or your children.  If you don't take care of yourself and you are unhappy, how do you think this affects them?  Now, think about how it affects them if you take care of yourself and are happy?  You have more to give when you are happy and if you have children, what better gift could you give them than having them be raised by someone who loves their life??

Here are 2 quick examples.  On the airplane, they tell you to put your mask on before you help others.  If you do not take care of yourself first, you are unable to help anyone else.  Also, think about you car, if the gas tank is empty, you can not go anywhere.  The same is true for you.  If you are running on empty and don't fill yourself up, you have nothing to give.  So, can you see how it is beneficial to take a little time for you to make sure your gas tank is full or you have your mask on before you help others?

Don't put yourself last and everyone else first.  Be healthy and take care of yourself so you have more to give others!

Questions-
Either journal about the questions or take some time to think about them.

- What do you do for yourself each day?
- If you could choose anything to do for yourself, what would it be?
- How would it make you feel to take care of yourself?
- What is holding you back?
- Can you overcome those obstacles?
- What will you do for yourself tomorrow?

Fieldwork 3A-Explore how you spend your time. Do you put everyone else first or do you take time for yourself? Your fieldwork is to take a little bit of time every day this week to do something for yourself. It can be big or small, you decide.

Enjoy your journey!
